Tony Palmer’s epic 1983 biopic of the iconic German composer Richard Wagner stars Richard Burton in his last major role.
Described by Opera News as ‘one of the most beautiful motion pictures in history’, it was filmed in 200 locations throughout Europe, many where the actual historical events took place.
The stellar cast includes Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Gemma Craven, Gwyneth Jones, Joan Greenwood, Sir William Walton and Gabriel Byrne. Wagner’s music, which underscores the action, is conducted by the late Sir George Solti.
Nearly 8 hours long, this edition has been restored and re-edited by the director and is in widescreen for the first time, as originally intended.
