The Battle of Algiers

This powerful account of the Algerian War of Independence won multiple awards and is generally regarded one of the greatest films of all time.

Recreating pivotal events that took place in Algiers in the 1950s, the film is remarkable for its even-handed treatment of the terrorists and their opponents, the French army.

Its gripping documentary-style realism pulls no punches and its portrayal of urban terrorism is so authentic that the film was shown at the Pentagon during the early stages of the Iraq war.

Aided by a Morricone score, this a film that grabs you by the scruff of the neck and doesn't let go.

Excellent film which brings to life the stories I'd heard from French colonialists who moved to Marseille in the late 50s/early 60s I'm very glad the guardian included it in their offers
