Pattern of Britain
The 4 films comprising 'The Pattern of Britain' were made at a unique moment in British history. Filmed between 1944-47, they serve the function of reclaiming the land and its regional differences for its inhabitants after years of seige during the Second World War. The quality of the pictures is superb.
Features The Grassy Shires - the farmlands of Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, Northants and Warwickshire; Fenlands - The story of the Fens and how good farmland was created over the centuries by managing the peat bogs; Cornish Valley - the remote inhospitable terrain tamed by resourceful and indomitable farmers and Downlands - from the chalk cliffs of Dover to the Cotswolds and the Mendips.
Crown of the Year
Four films covering the seasons of the year made during 1941 and 1942. The films, starting with Winter on the Farm, cover the year's activities on a selection of British farms when there was pressure to maximize the yields from the land. There are Land Girls at work, and the increasing use of mechanisation is evident, although horses still hold their own. The set continues with Spring on the Farm, Summer on the Farm, and culminates in the autumn harvest at the Crown of the Year.
Filmed in black and white. Each DVD is available for £12.99 but all 3 can be bought for £35.00. Select from the 'Special Option' Menu below.
