A superb 9-DVD set, containing six dramas written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff:

  • The Lost Prince
  • Perfect Strangers
  • Caught on a Train (dir. Duffell, 1980)
  • Shooting the Past
  • Friends and Crocodiles
  • Gideon's Daughter

  • Caught on a Train (1980) was inspired by the directors journey from London to Vienna as a young man. Dame Peggy Ashcroft stars as an enigmatic elderly Austrian woman travelling overnight in a compartment with a young Englishman (Michael Kitchen) on whom she has a profound and unsettling influence.

Shooting the Past (1999), concerns the uncertain fate of a large photographic archive and is a masterpiece of television drama, starring Lindsay Duncan and Timothy Spall.

The Lost Prince is the story of Prince Johnnie, the perhaps autistic child-prince who his family (British Royals Edward VIII) wanted to forget. Miranda Richardson, Gina McKee, Michael Gambon

In Friends and Crocodiles our protagonists are a man and a woman with an intense working relationship, falling apart and getting back together over the years with no romantic interest whatsoever a non-sexual relationship that shapes their lives as they navigate the snakes and ladders of the 70s and 80s. Neither the acting nor the direction could be better and Jodhi May, in particular, is luminous.

Perfect Strangers (2001).A large, wealthy, disparate family holds a reunion. We follow Daniel who has never met anyone there before and uncovers an array of wonderful family stories and relationships. Brilliantly acted with a constantly engaging air of mystery and discovery.

In Gideons Daughter Bill Nighy plays a hugely successful PR man struggling to maintain a relationship with his daughter against the backdrop of Labour's election victory and the death of Princess Diana in the summer of 1997. Miranda Richardson plays a mother trying to bury her grief in an unconventional way after the loss of her young son.

Extras to this 9 disc set include Cast interviews; Photo gallery; Poliakoff interview.

Price is just £32.99 including postage saving £27 on the retail price of £59.99.
