Filmed in 1966, this is for many Bergman's finest moment. He explores the tense, competitive relationship between a nurse and her charge, an actress who has suddenly stopped speaking for no apparent reason. Their personalities blend and blur in a bizarre osmosis and Bergman has never explored the human face (or rather the mask that it consists of) with greater incisiveness. With Nykvist's marvellous black and white photography this is a must-see film.
Fully uncut and with newly created, uncensored subtitles.
