Wonderful archive footage and genuinely excellent when covering the origins of jazz and early pioneers such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington but spends far too much time on the swing period and practically ignores free and avant-jazz, giving it a distinctly conservative bias.

A good variety of blues & jazz music, but the omission of mega stars like Leadbelly and Josh White give the impression that McCarthyism is still rife within the US music establishment!

Excellent product - just very disappointed that the British (DVD region 2) edition is so cut-down (about two-thirds) from the original USA (DVD Region 1)edition. Why? Are Brits thicker with shorter attention spans?

An incomplete history. 80% of the time is spent on pre WW2 trad. & swing. He ignores most modern jazz, covering Parker, Davis, etc. but pretty much ignores most post Bebop developments. A very biased view of jazz history and very disappointing.

The REAL history of Jazz is since Solomon Mention any player and see his genes and I have them not which is a giant disadvantage Some may say : Blacks from Africa No way - Ever heard one song or jam from there ? ( directly I mean ) but see my Obama Blues on YT anyway
